Artificial Intelligence as a Tool for Optimizing Logistics Processes in Shipping Companies: Thoothukudi Port Perspective

Abstract 

The shipping industry is undergoing a significant transformation with the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into logistics management processes. Shipping companies, particularly container terminals, are increasingly adopting AI driven technologies to enhance operational efficiency, accuracy, and decision making capabilities. This study aims to examine the use of Artificial Intelligence in the management of logistics processes in shipping companies with special reference to Thoothukudi Container Terminal. The primary objectives of the study are to present an overview of the profile of the respondents, to analyze the role of Artificial Intelligence in improving logistics processes in shipping companies, and to identify the key benefits derived from the use of AI in shipping logistics operations. The research is based on both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected from employees involved in logistics and operational activities using a structured questionnaire, while secondary data were gathered from journals, reports, and relevant online sources. The study reveals that Artificial Intelligence plays a vital role in improving logistics processes such as cargo handling, vessel scheduling, inventory management, predictive maintenance, and real-time tracking. The findings further indicate that the adoption of AI leads to benefits including improved operational efficiency reduced human errors, cost optimization, faster decision-making, enhanced safety, and better customer service. The study concludes that effective implementation of Artificial Intelligence can significantly strengthen logistics performance and competitiveness of shipping companies operating at container terminals.
