Abstract
A lot of attention is being paid these days to the strengthening and repair of weak columns or beamsutilizing various jacketing systems. Ferrocement jacketing is a desirable alternative for strengthening existing columns because of its favourable cost-performance ratio. The most popular method of retrofitting square short columns is standard square jacketing, but this method causes an excessive concentration of stress, necessitating the use of an upgraded jacketing approach with rounded column corners. The columns were strengthened using wire meshes of GI type and Ferro cement. The ultimate load-carrying capacity of the reinforced concrete column is estimated and the results are compared with that of conventional reinforced concrete. The jacketing technique with ferrocement confinement increases the strength of the column greatly.
Keywords: Ferrocement, wire mesh, reinforced column.
