ABSTRACT

Theni District is predominantly an agricultural district and will continue to be so in the foreseeable future. A vast majority of the people about 82 per cent live in villages. Nearly 70 percent directly or indirectly depend on agriculture for their livelihood and around 50 percent of the total national income is derived from agriculture. The researcher classifies the agricultural borrowers into crop loan borrowers, allied agricultural loan borrowers, and other agricultural loan borrowers. No activity of human beings is free from associated problems. However, the dimension of problems may vary from sector to sector. Problems connected with money inherently assume a greater dimension. The problems that arise due to different reasons are analyzed in this paper. The problems due to insufficiency of agricultural income, unreasonable installment amount, availing of fresh loans for repayment of old ones and its sources, defaults and reasons for defaults, and action taken by banks on defaults are taken into consideration. The expectation of the borrowers on prompter payment and its nature are also evaluated on the basis of responses received from them.
