Abstract
India's Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act has been in place since 2005 with the objective of improving the security of rural livelihoods. The survey seeks to assess the current livelihood status of MGNREGA beneficiaries and understand the programme's impact on rural households. The research employs a multi-faceted approach, considering factors such as employment generation, income improvement, skill development and overall socio-economic well-being. Sengalipalayam, a village nestled in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, serves as a microcosm for examining the practical implications of MGNREGA on the livelihoods of its beneficiaries. Against the backdrop of this unique locality, the study endeavours to explore the social situation of the beneficiaries’ of MGNREGA Act in Sengalipalayam village, Coimbatore; to investigate the way of creating sources of livelihood of the beneficiaries by the scheme and to evaluate the annual household expenditure of the beneficiaries before and after joining the MGNREGA scheme. The primary data collected from fifty beneficiaries by purposive random sampling technique for the period of January to February 2023. The current survey exposed that unskilled manual work, horticulture, agriculture development and recurring economic activity were the main activities by MGNREGA beneficiaries created livelihood assets for their villages. Further the survey expressed views of beneficiaries on MGNREGA were satisfied with the scheme, Implementation mechanism and facilities at MGNREGS.
