A Study on the Influence of South Indian Cinema on Youth Behaviour and Culture with Special Reference to Thoothukudi District

Abstract 

Cinema is a major source of entertainment for people, and a wide variety of cinema is available around us, among them South Indian cinema has a separate fan base which influence emotions, lifestyle and behaviour of youth. This study aims to examine how South Indian cinema influences youngster’s mind-set and behaviour, it’s positive and negative effects on youth, and also to create awareness of the consequences of cinema on youth. A descriptive research design was used here. Using a convenient sampling technique, responses were collected from 120 respondents through a structured questionnaire. For analysing the responses collected, percentage analysis and chi-square test were applied. The findings indicate humour as their favourite genre in South Indian movies. Most of the respondents feel South Indian movies sometimes reflect youth issues, and respondents consider Alcohol/Smoking as a main negative aspect of South Indian movies. This study suggests that filmmakers should concentrate on producing comedy and family oriented films and also focus on reducing the glorification of alcohol and smoking in movies. If such contents are used, a proper disclaimer should be given in movies. To conclude, If South Indian cinema is used properly, it can lead to the betterment of youth.
